Week of June 15 to June 19, 2020
Good day everyone
This last week of our home learning will include end of the year activities. We will not do the usual work that we have been doing for the last three months. Here is this week's schedule:
Monday:
We will do a 45 minutes math art project in geometry from the math workbook. Materials needed: 1) straws or tooth pics
2) modeling clay or marshmallows
Tuesday to Thursday:
Madame Houlahan will do a 5 minute read aloud every day and will read the story over a period of three days.
The children will be creating a memory book of this school year. Every day I will teach a different skill to use on the computer to create their memory book. This will be done on a google slide that they will be able to keep as a souvenir of their school year 2019-2020.
Friday:
I will have a special art project for a special week-end! The children will listen to me dubbing a video in French which will teach them the steps to do the project.
Materials needed: 1) a white piece of paper 8.5 x 11 and any piece of paper to put underneath to protect the table ( newspaper would work)
2) Markers, crayons or coloring pencils.

FYI that the audio portion of “Je lis, je lis, littératie!” is temporarily suspended – I am not pleased with that. Student can still read the books, of course, just don’t get the audio support.
Tech tip: If you are not able to get the Google Slides on Chromebooks or tablets, you need to download the free APP for Google Slides. You should also download the free APP for Google Docs and Google Drive.

- I added another read aloud site (fiction) to the blog and Google Classroom. It’s called “TAGADATSOINTSOIN PRODUCTION”. There are a variety of level of books here. Some of the books are a little younger but they would be good stories for your child to read by him or herself, with the audio muted, and unmute if there are tricky words. Listening to any books in French is also a good way to keep up one's level of French.
- I also added “MINIMAG”This a great magazine! There are articles that are easy to read and some more challenging. There is quite a variety of topics and sure to interest everyone. There are some none fiction pieces inside, some "how to" activities, jokes, stories, etc. It comes from Ontario so there is great Canadian content, too. They have been provided free on line (no audio though). - If your children haven’t yet joined the Google Classroom run by the school counsellors, just an FYI that the counsellors are posting some great stuff for our children – pertinent at any time, but especially good now. I’m in the “classroom” myself and find there are comments and activities which help me, too.
- Just a reminder that there are many resources for families and students which you can check out on a regular basis. At Sherwood School, the physical education teachers posts regular activities on their blog, as does our librarian, Mr, Duncan. Our music a teachers are posting weekly on their new blog at https://sherwoodmusicblog.weebly.com/ and our Home and School post many read alouds in both French and English.

1) UNDERSTANDING HOW TO USE “JE LIS LE LIS LITTÉRATIE“
(an on-line site with books for independent reading, with French audio support)
I’ll be explaining the basics of the site in French to the children in a video.
Here are a few things I’ll be telling the kids that are NOT in the parent explanations, in regards to how they should attempt to read their assigned online books:
1) UNDERSTANDING HOW TO USE “JE LIS LE LIS LITTÉRATIE“
(an on-line site with books for independent reading, with French audio support)
- Go to https://jelis-free.rkpublishing.com/student
- Sign in to your child’s account.
- Go to your child’s “Dashboard”.
- On the top-right, click the blue button which says “SHOW HELP”.
- Now you’ll see three sections in blue: “Overview” – “Accessing and Using the Online Readers” – “When You Are On the Last Page of the Reader”
- Read these sections to understand how the site works.
I’ll be explaining the basics of the site in French to the children in a video.
Here are a few things I’ll be telling the kids that are NOT in the parent explanations, in regards to how they should attempt to read their assigned online books:
- Choose the book you want to read.
- Before reading, read the title and glance through all the pictures in the book. Who will be in the story? Where will it take place? What do you think the problem will be? What might the solution be?
- Use the arrow buttons to go back to the beginning of the book.
- Now it’s time to read! Do it first without using the audio button.
- Read the story you see on the screen. Once you’ve read it by yourself, click on the audio button. Listen carefully. Is that how you read the words?
- When you are reading the first time and the word is tricky, try to read it the best you can. Does it make sense? Does it look right (like the letters you’d expect to see?). Does it sound right? (like the way Madame would say it?). Now check and see if you DID read it right! Click on the tricky word and then click the audio button. The word will be read to you.
- When you have read the book yourself, and listened to it being read to you, you can go back and re-read a favourite page. There is a red button on the last page which says “Click if you have finished reading.” ONLY CLICK THIS BUTTON AFTER YOU HAVE READ THE BOOK BY YOURSELF AND ALSO READ IT WHILE LISTENING TO IT.

1) Google Classroom
Today I am moving the daily home learning school work from this blog to Google Classroom.
Use your child's email address and password like you did the first time. See the video from Monday, April 6th if you forgot how to do it.
Once you get to where your child wrote me a message last week, click on the word "classwork" above the blue picture. You will see 3 web sites to refer to for extra resources plus today's date.
You can open each one of the sites by clicking on the far left where you see the name of each site below the words "All topics"and you can close them by clicking on "All topics". You can also click on each individual subtitles such as "Tumblebooks" to open only one section at a time.
The home learning work will always be situated below the date. When you open this section you will see that it is divided in 3 subtitles: Reading, Writing, Math. To see the instructions, click on the one of those subtitles and the instructions will unfold. So try and see how you get along. At this point the children don't have to send anything to me. We will try this a little later.
2) Je lis, je lis, littératie
I have enrolled the class with "Je lis,je lis, littératie". The children will have access to leveled books. In the next few days, I will send individual email to give you your child's login number and password for the "Je lis, je lis littératie". It will take me a few days to accomplish this. Once everyone has received their login number and password, I will post the site. Then I will give you further instructions on how this site works!
That is all for now, let me know if you run in some difficulty. I hope this is not too much. Do what you can, there is always tomorrow!

1) Information about the daily work
Today you will see that the information on the daily work on 3 different documents. You will have to scroll down for each one.
In reading aloud, we now have access to Tumble Books on the school website. For read aloud the closest thing that I could find that would be close to Easter is a story about a rabbit "Lapinikio". So go on the school website to learning resources and click on Tumble Books. On the upper right corner for languages click on the little arrow and change the language to French. Then look for the book "Lapinikio" by Lili Chartrand.
In reading independently you will need a fictional book from your book bag.
In writing independently: The children are starting to plan a story. So keep your plan because you will need it next week.
In math you will play a game with dice.
Google classroom: I am hope to be ready by Tuesday to have the children find their work there from now on. Keep your fingers crossed. I will still use this page to give the daily information to parents. If there is any problem just send me a email. This has been quite a week for everyone. I wish you all a Happy Easter with your family!

1) Information about the daily work
I have added a new page next to this one up above titled "Daily home school work". We will see how this system works for now. If it needs changes after we try this I will make them.
As you probably know by now, the children in grade 3 will have 45 minutes per of school work. Of course this Friday and Monday will be a holiday so no school work and no school work on week-ends.
Some parents were wondering about Tumble Books on our school home page. Right now there is a problem with accessing it. Our tech person is aware of it and will be correcting it as soon as possible.
I will be registering our class with "Je lis, je lis, litératie" it is full of video stories. I have been trying for the last few days and there too there was a problem. I just received and email from them that everything is fixed. So I will be working on this over the week-end and give you more information later. For now I will be directing to our audio stories already on the blog. I put an audio story with "Book Box" on the daily work sheet. All you have to do is do "control ctrl and click" the mouse on the link that I put. The story is "Le cricket au zoo". If the link does not work, you can access it on "youtube".
So let's try our first day of work and see how it goes. I am not using google classroom this week. I am still trying to get familiar with it so bear with me. Let me know if you encounter any problems.
Happy school everyone!

1) Google Classroom: Here is a site below to help parents get on Google Classroom. Have your child use his email address and password that I gave you over the phone. Once you have reached Mme MacGregor 3A, click on the plus sign+ on the upper right corner. It will tell you to "join the class". To join the class you must enter the code zbcue3d. The link below will explain how to get to Mme MacGregor 3A. There is a message from me. I have asked the children to leave a little message. It can be about anything they want to say to me. It is their choice. Of course they have to write it in French. That is all I want from them today. I just want to test and see if they are able to make the connection. We have not done this this year yet but I know they did it in grades 1 and 2. Hopefully it will come back to them.
So take your time, we are all learning together (especially me!). Don't hesitate to let me know if you have a problem. I'll give you 2 days to try this. More information will come on Wednesday about time on task at home and the school work etc. Thank you for patience. You will also see a video of me. I just learned how to screencastify after many days of trying. This will show you how to get to "Google Classroom". When I listen to it the sound was not great but try it anyway. I'll see what I can do later about that problem. I hope it helps!

Hello everyone
During the next couple of days I will be calling you at home. I need to give you your child's new username and password. They were given out on our last day of school. The children did use them on that day but certainly did not have a chance to memorize it. They are a little more complicated than before for security reasons. If there is a better time on day for me to call you please send me an email to [email protected]. If I don't hear from you I'll assume that I can call at anytime during the day. This is something that needs to be done over the phone for security reasons. If there is anything else you need to reach me for just send me an email and I will get back to you within 24 hours as much as possible.
Yesterday we just got the green light to continue to communicate through the blog. At some point we may use google classroom for small question and answer type of work not sure yet if we will be aloud to use google meet. This is when we see everyone in a little square to talk to each other. if we do this it would not be more than 6 or 7 children at a time. This type of communication will take time to establish since it will be new for most of us including me.
I am in constant contact with other teachers to try to set different ways to communicate. Yesterday I learn how to create and send the google doc "Technology Survey"that I am asking you to answer. Next I am learning how to screencastify to be able to send how to do some activities. This would be a recording of me explain the activity. This is something that can be viewed at anytime that suits you, just like the other activities posted on the blog.
We have been advised not to introduce anything new. It will be mostly a review of what we have done so far this year. A lot of the activities that we have done are already posted on the blog and the children can do them at anytime. I usually used the "Holiday game" section for a reward which worked quite well in class. I would suggest to work on an activity for 5 or 10 minutes and choose one in each section reading, spelling and math. Starting next Wednesday I will blog every day to give instructions to the children. They already have books at home and we we will be able to use that material. At the primary grade we are doing 45 minutes of work a day.
This is a lot to take in. So don't hesitate to contact me if there is any issues. I will be glad to help as much as I can. Please keep checking the blog for messages just in case I need to give you more information between now and Wednesday and don't forget to fill out the google form below. Thank you for being so patient and have a great day!

Welcome back everyone!
March 27 2020
It feels like I have not seems all of you for such a long time but it is only been two weeks. Having a way to communicate with technology certainly will help. I really miss seeing you all. I am not able to upload a picture with my phone since it does not have that capability. We now know that we will not be back before May 11th with further announcement. Don't worry about doing any work for now. I am not adding anything new to the blog for now. In the meantime, you can certainly continue to do any activities that you want on the blog. Start with things where you need more practice. One thing I have added is an Easter game from the section "Holiday games". I also added one for kindergarten in case you have a brother or sister in kd. You can be the teacher! Just something fun to play with! One story that I want to share with you and you remember my story about the mouse well this my story about doctor Morrison. She is the pretty lady on television that helps keep all of us healthy.
My story about doctor Morrison
When I was a student teacher, I had to practice teach in many classes before I could become a real teacher. . One class where I was assigned was at West Kent school in grade four. The teacher I had to work with was mister Campbell. He had to give me directions on how to teach his class. This was a class with over twenty-five students. French immersion was just a few years old at that time. The class was a very nice class just like all of you. So I thought that class for three weeks. Now one funny thing that happens in our class is to count how many of your parents or aunts and uncles I have thought over the years. Well doctor Morrison happened to be in that class. I had the honor of teaching her too. I remember her just like it happened yesterday. She was sitting at the front of the class with her long blond pigtails and a beautiful smile. Her hand was always up to answer many questions just like many of you. She loved to learn new things. Well she must have since she is now a doctor! She loved to speak French and I can see now that she is still using it in her work. How useful it is for her now. Every time she is on television, I always remember how she was in that class.
Well that is the end of my story for now. I hope that I put enough details for you to imagine that you were there too. I have a little project in mind for our class to practice our writing skills. I will give you more details later. It took me a long time to decide how to connect with all of you. I wanted it to be special and I hope you enjoyed my little story and that it will inspire you to continue to to do your best work. We will learn in a different way for a while. That should be very interesting. I will also learn along with you. Enjoy your time with your family and don't forget to wash your hands properly and cough in your sleeves like doctor Morrison explained. I miss being with you all but we are lucky to be able to stay in touch and have such good advice to follow from doctor Morrison. I'll be in touch soon!
